All these flash new smart apartments going up around Keysborough look the part, but without the right wiring behind the plaster, you’re pretty much running a Ferrari on a dirt track. We’ll walk through why a decent Wi-Fi router alone won’t cut it, and why getting the cables sorted from day one stops your brand-new place feeling like it’s stuck in dial-up days.

Think about all the stuff connected in a modern apartment. You’ve got a TV streaming 4K. Someone’s on a work video call in the spare room. A video doorbell pings every time a delivery shows up. Smart speaker in the kitchen, a couple of phones scrolling TikTok, maybe a PlayStation downloading a massive update. Some places even have smart blinds, air-con you control from your phone, and a security camera watching the car park.
They’re all screaming for a slice of your internet at once.
Wi-Fi is great for convenience. But it has limits. Every wall it passes through weakens the signal a little. Your neighbour’s router is probably blasting away on the same channel. The microwave can mess with it too. And here’s a thing most folks don’t know: your router can only chat to one device at a time. It switches between them so fast you don’t notice—until there are too many devices, then it starts to creak. You get buffering. Lag. Calls dropping out. The spinning wheel of frustration.
That’s not a faulty connection. That’s just too many devices on a single wireless road. In an apartment block with dozens of units all running their own Wi-Fi, the airwaves get seriously jammed.
That’s where a proper data cable installation changes everything.
It’s not complicated. Think of it like plumbing. Your house needs pipes in the walls to get water to every tap. Wi-Fi is like a sprinkler on the lawn hoping enough lands in the right spot. A wired connection is a dedicated pipe.
Data cabling means running proper communication cables—usually Cat6 or better—from a central spot (a cupboard or garage) out to wall sockets in the rooms that need them. Your TV, gaming console, desktop computer, and security cameras all plug straight into the wall. They’re not fighting for wireless airspace. They get their own private lane.
The wiring standards in Australia (AS/NZS 11801) cover how this should be designed and installed. It supports internet, phones, video, and even power for devices like security cameras. A well-planned system handles all of it.
And the law is clear. The ACMA says cabling work must be done by a registered cabler, or under their direct watch. A registered cabler brings a proper signal tester, knows the rules, and can certify the job meets the standard. It’s not a handyman job.
Nobody’s bagging Wi-Fi. It’s perfect for your phone, your tablet, your laptop wandering around the house. But relying on it for everything is where people get caught out.
A wired connection gives you speed and reliability. Cat6 cable can push data at up to 10 gigabit per second over shorter runs—far more than the fastest NBN plan you can buy today. More importantly, it’s stable. Walls don’t affect it. Your neighbour’s gadgets don’t affect it. It just works.
For certain gear, wired is really the only smart choice. Security cameras streaming non-stop. Your main telly where you actually want a clean picture. A home office where a dropped video call can’t happen. Gaming setups where split-second lag ruins your night. Smart home hubs that run your lights and blinds.
A lot of people blame their internet provider for poor speed internet when the real bottleneck is inside the flat. An old, cheap cable or relying on Wi-Fi through three walls is usually the real troublemaker.
Keysborough’s changed a lot. There’s serious building happening—over 13,000 properties now, with house prices up more than 25% in five years. The median house price is above a million dollars, and even units sit around $810,000.
A big chunk of this is the Peet Keysborough project: a $56 million development delivering 164 new townhouses on Chapel Road. These are double-storey homes with two, three, and four bedrooms, aimed at first-home buyers and families. There’s also over a hundred townhouses planned opposite Keysborough Gardens Primary School, close to transport and shops.
All these new builds are designed for modern living. But the question buyers should ask—and often don’t—is what’s actually inside the walls.
Builders install the basics to meet minimum code, but that’s not a gold standard. If you’re moving into a brand-new townhouse and expecting to plug in a smart TV, a security system, a mesh Wi-Fi network, and a home office, you need more than one lonely data point behind the telly. The right time to plan a data cable installation is during the framing stage, before the plaster goes up. After the walls are sealed, adding a new point gets messy, dusty, and expensive.
The same goes for older places that have been renovated. Keysborough has plenty of established homes where the kitchen’s been redone but the wiring’s from the 90s. The NBN box ends up in the garage because that’s where the old phone line was. The Wi-Fi router sits behind the couch because there’s no data port in the living room. It works, sort of. But it’s not how anyone planned it.
A real smart home isn’t about gadgets scattered around. It’s about the hidden wiring that lets everything talk to each other without getting in a mess.
Here’s what a properly wired setup looks like. There’s a central hub—usually a cupboard, the garage, or a little nook—where all the cables come together. That’s where the NBN connection lands, where the main router or network switch lives, and where every room connects back to.
From that hub, dedicated Cat6 runs go to the main TV and media area, any home office or study nook, the ceiling for wireless access points that give you proper Wi-Fi across the flat, the eaves and entry points for security cameras, and any spot where a smart home controller might sit.
The beauty is it separates your network traffic. The security cameras aren’t wrestling Netflix for bandwidth. The gaming console isn’t elbowing the work laptop. Everything gets what it needs.
And it’s future-proof. Cat6a cable installed today will still be doing its job in 15 years. Wi-Fi standards change every few years, but the cables in your walls stay the same. If you ever upgrade your router or access points, it’s a simple swap—the wiring’s already there.
A few things always get overlooked when planning a home network.
The NBN box ends up in a weird spot, like the back of the garage. That’s often because the builder put it where the old copper phone line came in and nobody thought to move it. Your main router should be somewhere central, not tucked behind the lawnmower.
Power to the ceiling. Those ceiling-mounted Wi-Fi points need electricity. If you’re running data cable up there, get power run at the same time. Adding a power point in the ceiling later is a headache.
Only one data port behind the TV. You’ve got a telly, a gaming console, a streaming box, maybe a soundbar—all wanting a wired connection. A small network switch can split that single port, but running multiple cables from the start is cleaner.
For apartment blocks, there’s shared stuff to think about too. The main communications room for the building needs proper planning. Cabling between floors must be organised. Every unit needs its own dedicated line back to the building’s main distribution point. It’s not a one-man job running a few cables. It should be baked into the building design from day one.
Not every sparky does data cabling, and not every data cabler is a licensed electrician. There’s a specific registration system for communications cabling in Australia, run by the ACMA.
Anyone installing fixed data cabling in your walls must be a registered cabler. There are different levels: Open Registration covers most home and commercial work, while Restricted covers simpler stuff. The registration proves they’ve had the training and know the wiring rules.
For a smart apartment build, you want someone with Open Registration who carries a proper cable certifier. This tool tests every run and produces a report showing the cable hits the required performance spec. Without that report, you’re taking someone’s word that the wiring’s good. Once the plaster’s on, there’s no way to check.

You can, but if you’ve got more than a handful of devices, you’ll see buffering and dropouts eventually. Wi-Fi’s great for phones and tablets, but fixed things like TVs, consoles, and security cameras work far better on a cable.
Cat6 at a minimum. Cat6a gives you a bit more headroom for future speed jumps. Don’t bother with Cat5e—it’s old and won’t handle the speeds you’ll want in a few years.
